Last
weekend, we went to Dinant, a small and lovely Belgian town, on the Meuse river, situated 140 km away from Luxembourg.
Dinant is a small but very picturesque city. It
stretches along the river Meuse against the steep rock. Adolphe Sax was born here. Dinant was also the
scene of one of the greatest massacres of the First World War: the city was
occupied by the German troops, and the French troops had come to defend it. As
a form of reprisal, and arguing that they had been attacked by civilians, German troops returned and killed, indiscriminately,
674 civilians among men, women and children! Unbelievable...
It was precisely in the memorial allusive to
this event that I dropped a Pingo. There, you can read the names of all the
victims, their age, and also the streets where the terrible event occurred. Each
place of collective execution is marked by perforations evoking the impact of
bullets that hit the victims and the facades of the city. Believe me, it is a
sadly breathtaking experience.
